$55M Church Plan by Apostle Lubega Raises Eyebrows Nationwide

Apostle Grace Lubega, the leader of Phaneroo Ministries International, is facing widespread backlash after unveiling plans in a video that spread like wildfire to build a $55 million mega-church in Kampala.
The self-proclaimed Apostle made the announcement during a recent sermon and it has sparked heated debate among Ugandans as many of whom question the project’s necessity and financial transparency amid the crippled country’s economic struggles.
Lubega, who was banker but later turned into a preacher said that the church would be built without loans or public fundraising.
The criticism comes at a time when Pastor Aloysius Bugingo of House of Prayer Ministries has spent over a decade collecting funds to build the Pentagon Church yet not even a foundation has been laid.

Sources indicate that Lubega obtained government land in Naguru, where his mega church will be built. The Apostle was summoned by the Ugandan Parliament in 2024 to explain how he obtained the land and how the ministry plans to finance the project..

Many Ugandans are now drawing comparisons between Apostle Lubega and Pastor Bugingo questioning the accountability and intentions behind these grand religious projects.
Lubega’s recent remarks have further fueled the backlash in 2024 when he urged congregants to abandon traditional names, especially from the Buganda kingdom.
Despite the criticism, some are still siding and defending Lubega’s vision, citing Phaneroo has not demanded donations from anyone.
