GNL Zamba Claims He’s Uganda’s Hip Hop King - Can He Reclaim the Throne?

Legendary Ugandan rapper and Baboon Forest Entertainment CEO, GNL Zamba, is once again making headlines after boldly reaffirming his dominance in the country’s hip hop scene.
In a recent interview, the singer widely known for pioneering Lugaflow rap declared himself the KING of the genre.
“I am the hip hop of Uganda. Without me, there is no hip hop.” he said.
GNL Zamba has long been credited with bringing Ugandan rap into the mainstream. His creative fusion of Luganda and English, wrapped in conscious lyrics and African storytelling, helped shape an entire generation of local hip hop lovers.

“I paved the way. When you talk Ugandan hip hop, you are talking GNL,” he added.
He is also the founder and CEO of Baboon Forest Entertainment, a label that became a powerhouse in Uganda’s music scene. Under his leadership.
Baboon Forest nurtured notable artists like Mun G, Big Trill and many others both of whom have carved out successful careers in their own right.
For the past few years, GNL had been based in the United States where he pursued international music projects and cultural exchange initiatives under his duo project Nsimbi with his wife, Miriam Tamar.
However, his recent return to Uganda has sparked renewed excitement and speculation among fans.
His statements may sound bold, but few can dispute GNL Zamba’s legacy. As one of the earliest voices to commercialize hip hop in Uganda, his contributions have paved the way for many who followed.
Zamba’s returned at a time when the Ugandan hip hop landscape is largely dominated by artists like Fik Fameica, Fefe Bussi, and Gravity Omutujju; rappers he claims have strayed from the core principles of the genre.
According to GNL, much of today’s so-called hip hop is diluted and lacks authenticity. He believes many of the current stars don’t truly understand hip hop culture.
