KIU Ishaka Student Found Dead Near Hostel in Suspected Suicide

Heartache has descended on Kampala International University (KIU), Ishaka campus, after the tragic death of one of its students John Lukoma.

John Lukoma was found hanging from an avocado tree just a few meters from the male students’ hostel.

Greater Bushenyi Regional Police Spokesperson, ASP Apollo Tayebwa, confirmed the incident and said investigations are underway.

“Our team responded immediately. The body was taken to KIU Teaching Hospital mortuary for a postmortem. For now, we are treating it as a suspected suicide,” Tayebwa stated.

Lukoma's death has sparked conversations about the unseen mental health struggles many students endure while a Campus.

Lukoma’s roommate Patrick Okoume while talking to the authorities, he said that Lukoma was carrying a heavy burden on his heart and constantly worrying about money.

“John was carrying a heavy load, he was constantly stressed about money, tuition, food, rent, it all weighed on him. He wanted to finish his degree, but he didn’t see how he could. I tried to encourage him, but I don’t think he saw a way out.” Patrick said.

The Campus administration has released an official public statement following the death of Lukoma urging the studentsa to always seek help and not to die in silence.

“This is a loss that cuts deep, even if you didn’t know John personally, his death touches us all. If you are feeling overwhelmed, please know you are not alone. Our counseling services are open to everyone. Let’s stand together and support one another.” the stetement says partly.

The mood across Ishaka Campus is somber while students are still grieving while some were are left with a mix of sorrow and unanswered questions.

John Lukoma’s passing has not only shaken KIU Ishaka as a community but also raised questions about mental health support, especially among young people facing academic and financial pressures.
