The National Unity Platform (NUP) has claimed another victory in Uganda’s student leadership arena, with Benjamin Akiso emerging as the 21st Guild President of Kyambogo University.
The election which was held on March 21, 2025, saw an estimated 33,000 students cast their ballots at the Banda-based institution.
Akiso’s victory over Bwete, an independent candidate known for his grassroots appeal, and Andama, backed by the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), underscores NUP’s growing influence among Uganda’s youth.

The win wasn’t universally celebrated. Some students questioned the process, with whispers of irregularities circulating on campus. “The vote count took too long, and some polling stations ran out of ballots,” claimed one second-year engineering student.
As Akiso prepares to take office, expectations are high. His manifesto promised to address dilapidated lecture halls, inconsistent water supply, and the contentious issue of tuition hikes, challenges that have plagued Kyambogo for years.
