Eng. Patrick Oboi Amuriat, the current president of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), has been officially nominated as a candidate for the party’s presidential flagbearer position in the lead-up to the 2026 general elections. The nomination ceremony took place at the FDC’s headquarters in Najjanankumbi, Kampala, and marks a significant milestone in the party’s roadmap toward contesting national leadership.

Amuriat, who previously represented the FDC in the 2021 elections, submitted his nomination papers to the party’s electoral commission during a well-attended event that brought together party officials, supporters, and delegates. His nomination was confirmed after meeting all set requirements by the commission, clearing the way for him to begin campaigning internally for the top slot.

This development signals the start of what is expected to be a competitive internal race within the opposition party. Other contenders in the running include the party’s Secretary General Nathan Nandala Mafabi, along with Matsiko Dan, Usaama Ssemogerere, Malinga Gerald, and Bumba Arinest. These aspirants had all obtained nomination forms before the May 2 deadline and are now preparing to appeal to over 1,200 FDC delegates who will determine the party’s flagbearer in the coming weeks.

Amuriat’s nomination comes at a time when the party continues to navigate internal tensions, particularly the long-standing divisions with the Katonga faction, led by Erias Lukwago and Wasswa Biriggwa. While reconciliation discussions are reportedly ongoing, conditions remain strict and no official consensus has yet been reached.

His previous campaign in 2021 was marred by significant obstacles, including security incidents and pressure from state actors, underscoring the challenges opposition leaders often face in Uganda’s political landscape.

Despite these hurdles, the nomination process proceeded smoothly and is being seen by party officials as a positive reflection of FDC’s commitment to internal democracy. With the race now underway, attention turns to how each candidate will position themselves on key national issues, including economic instability, unemployment, and civil liberties.

The FDC Electoral Commission has emphasized the need for a peaceful, issue-driven campaign period as the party prepares to finalize its presidential flagbearer in the coming months.
