The Prime Minister (Katikkiro) of Buganda Kingdom, Charles Peter Mayiga, has made a renewed appeal to the Government of Uganda, calling for the immediate settlement of a significant financial debt owed to the kingdom.

While delivering the Kingdom Address 2025, Mayiga highlighted the urgent need for the government to release the funds, stating that the unpaid debt has severely constrained the kingdom’s operations.

''Gavumenti ya Uganda tugibanja ensimbi nkumu ddala, Tusaba ensimbi ze tubanja zitusasulwe tusobole okukola ku nsonga zaffe.

Ensonga eno nsaba ku mulundi guno gavumenti ya uganda egitwale nga ntulu esasule obwakabaka ensimbi zaabwo.'' the letter states.

"We are demanding alot of money from the Government of Uganda. We request that the money we are owed be paid so that we can handle our own affairs. This time, we ask that the Government of Uganda take this matter seriously and pay the kingdom its money."

The Buganda Kingdom is reportedly demanding more than UGX 250 billion from the central government. The majority of this amount stems from unpaid rent for land and properties currently used by the government throughout the Buganda region.

Although the Ugandan government has made public commitments to resolve the long-standing issue, little progress has been seen.

Tensions between the central government and Buganda Kingdom have simmered since the monarchy’s restoration in 1993 under President Yoweri Museveni. As a major cultural and political institution representing nearly 14 million people, the Buganda Kingdom has consistently called for greater autonomy and the return of its assets seized during the 1966 abolition of traditional kingdoms by then-Prime Minister Milton Obote.
