Museveni Welcomes Starlink as Uganda Pushes for Rural Internet Expansion

Starlink ambassadors Ben MacWilliams and Brandi Oliver met with Uganda’s President Yoweri K. Museveni, at the State house to discuss the rollout of affordable, high-speed satellite internet across the country. The meeting represents a key step in Starlink’s mission to close the digital divide in underserved regions of Uganda.
President Museveni welcomed the Starlink delegation and applauded their efforts to provide cost effective internet solutions, particularly to remote and rural communities.
'Yesterday in Nakasero, I had a productive meeting with Starlink representatives, Ben MacWilliams and Brandi Oliver, brought to me by Ambassador Adonia and Ambassador Popp. I appreciate their commitment to providing low-cost internet in hard-to-reach areas and establishing a presence in Uganda. They are welcome.'' Museveni wrote on X.

Starlink, operated by SpaceX, is rapidly expanding across Africa due to its capacity to offer reliable internet in areas where traditional infrastructure is lacking.
During the meeting, the Starlink ambassadors presented strategies for working hand-in-hand with local partners to improve access and affordability while tackling long-standing issues such as high service costs and limited connectivity infrastructure.

This engagement signals Uganda’s readiness to embrace global technological partnerships in pursuit of its digital transformation agenda. Experts suggest that Starlink’s entry could be a game-changer for sectors like education, health, and entrepreneurship, especially in remote communities that have remained disconnected from digital resources.
